Mental Health at Work

As we already know, one in four people in the UK will have a mental health problem at some point. Earlier this year the CIPD published their Health and Well-being at Work Survey results. They found that 60% of organisations had seen an increase in reported common mental health conditions, such as anxiety and depression, in the past 12 months.

These results were measured prior to the outbreak of Coronavirus and we predict that organisations will be seeing a far higher figure during 2020 and beyond. So we thought we’d share some great resources on mental health, particularly in light of the pandemic.

Useful resources

The Mental Health Foundation is part of the national mental health response during the coronavirus outbreak. The government advice they share under constant review and will be different depending on where you live. With information covering topics such as bereavement and loss, tips for employers and employees, well being while staying at home during the outbreak, there is plenty of useful information and support here.

The NHS have some useful tools available including a mood self assessment and audio guides, plus a wealth of information on depression, anxiety, anger, raising self esteem and plenty more. We particularly liked their easy time management tips and ten stress busters.

ACAS also have a useful bank of resources including why it is important to support mental health at work and when an employer might want to involve occupational health.

Our final recommendation is the Health and Safety Executive, who have resources such as ‘talking toolkits’ and stress risk assessments to support employers. They have a whole section of their website designated to workplace stress, with posters, workbooks and more.

Workplace programmes

Organisations with effective workplace well-being programmes can deliver great benefits to not just individuals but the organisation itself, their communities and ultimately the economy as a whole. Businesses actively promotes a state of well-being, both body and mind, are reaping the benefits through increased resilience, lower sickness absence plus higher performance and productivity.

However, often the stumbling block is the implementation, with many organisations paying lip service, giving lower priority or simply seeing it as a stand-alone initiative rather integrating well being into their systems, processes, leadership and culture.
